Sante's Biography

Sante Arduini was born in 1938 in Urbino, a small city in la Marche region, in the centre of Italy. In the twelve century, the town prospered under the hand of Federigo da Montefeltro followed by the Della Rovere family in 1508 and finally the papacy. Since the Renaissance, Urbino is well-known for its famous school of painting and its illustrious artists.

Sante attended la Scuola del Libro (School of the Book) founded in 1864 and began exhibiting his work in Turin in 1962. The same year, Sante won a Gold Medal for Engraving in Milan. Six years later, he moved to Bergamo, where he taught Figure Drawing at the Liceo Artistico (School of Art) and Engraving at the Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti (Fine Art Academy). During this time, he perfected several engraving techniques, in particular, colour in engraving; and, he collaborated with the Galerie Librairie Niçaise in Paris.

In 1978, Sante came back to Urbino where he now lives and works with assiduity He made a large collection of colour engravings for the Galleria Lorenzelli in Bergamo; and he taught painting disciplines at the Istituto Statale d'Arte (Institute of Art) and at the Accademia di belle Arti (Fine Art Academy). Sante's works are exhibited worldwide but this is the only site dedicated to him and where some of his works can be purchased via the Order Page.

Sante's Techniques

In his work, Sante Arduini's aim is to give a third dimension to his painting. Yes, Sante is not only an illustrious painter, he is also a remarkable engraver and he uses numerous techniques, tools, and materials to obtain three-dimensional effects; he even invented the ingenious press that we shall see on the video.

Sante plays with colours and shapes, thickness and consistency, materials and acid. On a sheet of metal, the artist lets this acid alter matter; or, according to his mood and intuition, he patiently carves the veins which look so much like the furrows of the Italian countryside. With his crayons, paintbrushes, spatulas, gravers, or chisels, Sante Arduini lets his imagination and talent dance on paper, canvas, wood, metal; and the result is always amazingly beautiful.

How to choose and exhibit your painting

When we look at an abstract painting, we often try to capture reality. Like on maps, where marks are symbols, Sante Arduini's paintings are strictly structured; each successive linear stroke is always carefully calculated so the ensemble presents an original vision of space and landscape. However, some of Sante's works are purely abstract as if the artist wanted to lay his soul on paper or canvas; and from the flow of his emotions emerges an harmony of colours and shapes sometimes brutally disturbed by an unreasonable dark stroke coming from nowhere as if the creator wanted to remind us of the reality of life and its unpredictability.

Nevertheless, we can only imagine the various emotions the artist felt when he created his abstract or non-abstract work; indeed, this work could have taken an unexpected turn. But the artist's emotions rarely influence our judgement and our decision to buy a work of art. It is the painting's impact on our inner-soul, our own emotions; and there is nothing objective in our decision; it is just a lightning in the heart that surprises and perhaps overwhelms us.

Whatever the work of art is, the essential is to know how to exhibit by absolutely avoiding patterned wallpapers and walls already covered by paintings. The ideal is a wall of neutral colour; even dark colour walls are suitable as they may enhance the painting. Lighting is also very important and well oriented spots often make miracles.

About me

My name is Irina. I live in Tasmania, the island off the south east coast of the Australian mainland.

I met Sante Arduini in Italy, Urbino, in 2000 and was impressed by his unusual technique and skills. I like his use of bright colours and the way in which he combines them, his perception of Nature and Land…

I became Sante’s agent in Australia in 2002 and the first exhibition which was organized in Daylesford, Victoria, was very successful and attracted many visitors.

Have a look at his works and perhaps consider buying something from our Gallery for yourself and your friends.
